In the meantime, you can check out the poster below.

Determined to fight back, a group of young patriots seek refuge in the surrounding woods, training and reorganizing themselves into a guerilla group of fighters. Snow White and the Huntsman reviewed

The Evil Queen - now that sounds like a better title for this movie. Oscar-winner Charlize Theron took on the character of Queen Ravenna with a vengeance. Here, she is beautiful, vulnerable, evil, contemptible and even pathetic. This movie is about the evil queen and everything else is just incidental.

There is no doubting her. We slowly realize why the queen we hate turned out to be what she is.  Yet she is not invincible, she has weaknesses that did not deviate from the original story. Add the great effects to her acting and amazing retelling of Queen Ravenna’s story and you have a very powerful and effective villain.

So it is disappointing to see that the other half of this power struggle was swallowed whole by Theron and her character. It’s already hard to suspend disbelief that Kristen Stewart is the fairest of them all but not having a wider range of acting skills left her tailing behind even more. The shots through the movie though led me to believe that her beauty laid between her slim shoulder blades – as that seems to be the director’s favorite angle.

Stewart’s acting range seems to be limited to blank, slightly happy to pained – it worked well for the Twilight series but this movie simply required more. I should have felt pity for her, sorrow, inspiration, happiness… but… oh, Chris Hemsworth – eye candy! And as easy as that, our attention is distracted from Stewart.

If somebody else filled in Snow White’s boots, then we might have better things to say.  Say, Saoirse Ronan (exceptional acting in Hanna) who was also considered for the movie. Other names considered and might have done better would be Alicia Vikander (A Royal Affair), Dakota Fanning (The Runaways) and Bella Heathcote (Dark Shadows). They were all considered for the role, and we dare say any one of them would have given it more justice.

Aside from that, the story itself puts a lot of assumption on Snow White’s role that she is the fairest and has the kindest of hearts. This part could have benefitted with back stories and details much like what they did with Queen Ravenna’s story. Why was she the salvation of them all? Was it only her royal blood? But then why that scene in the lake which was straight out of Princess Mononoke? And no, that one scene in her childhood is not enough.

    Princess Mononoke

Overall though, the movie is a very good interpretation of the classic fairy tale Snow White. Granted, it should have been The Evil Queen, but the effects were amazing, Theron equally so (and she is enough reason to see this film) and the story was aptly dark and brooding.

We give it a 8 out of 10. Go watch it.

    3. Enjoy every moment of your pregnancy as it’s a precious gift from Allah :)

    By Basma Nazer

    1. Rock of Ages

Featuring big names such as Tom Cruise, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Alec Baldwin, Mary J. Blige, Russel Brand, and more, Rock of Ages will definitely rock your summer.

It tells the story of small town girl Sherrie and city boy Drew, who meet on the Sunset Strip while pursuing their Hollywood dreams. Their rock ‘n’ roll romance is told through the heart-pounding hits of Def Leppard, Joan Jett, Journey, Foreigner, Bon Jovi, Night Ranger, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Poison, Whitesnake, and more.

    Releases in June 2012.

    Rock of Ages

    2. The Dark Knight Rises

After the creepily ingenious portrayal of Heath Ledger as Joker, the world as an audience have upped its expectation of Dark Knight movies. Could this sequel, said to be Christian Bale’s last stint as the man of the night top the previous one?

With an edgy trailer showing us a glimpse of great cinematography and a look at the just as stellar cast which includes Liam Neeson, Anne Hathaway, Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman – we think we can indeed set the bar high.

    Releases in July 2012.

    The Dark Knight Rises

    3. The Bourne Legacy

The movie that catapulted usually mild-mannered Matt Damon into a legitimate action hero is back. Except it does not have Damon in it. Instead we go into the next chapter where Aaron Cross played by Jeremy Renner is pushed into an everyday life-or-death situation because of the events that happened in the first three films.

Renner is joined by Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Stacy Keach, Oscar Isaac and Bourne series veterans Albert Finney, Joan Allen, David Strathairn and Scott Glenn.

    Releases August 2012.

    The Bourne Legacy

    4. Ice Age: Continental Drift

We’ll witness Scrat once again in his nutty pursuit of the cursed acorn, which he’s been after since the dawn of time. And again, this mindless obsession results in world-changing consequences – a continental cataclysm that triggers the greatest adventure of all for Manny, Diego and Sid. In the wake of these upheavals, Sid reunites with his cantankerous Granny, and the herd encounters a ragtag menagerie of seafaring pirates determined to stop them from returning home.

    Releases July 2012.

    Ice Age: Continental Drift

    5. Prometheus

Another must not miss, specially if you’re a Sci-fi fan is Ridley Scott’s (Alien, Blade Runner) latest offering. Arab celebrities converge in Dubai

    • UAE Singer Ruweida Al Mahrouqi, Lebanese Actress Nadine Al Rasi and Egyptian Actress Rania Yousef endorse Parachute Gold for its superior quality
    • Parachute Gold is available for various hair types in two formats, Oil & Cream

Dubai, UAE; April 25, 2012: Marico Middle East, part of Marico Group, a global leader in the beauty and wellness space, today unveiled the new look ‘Parachute Gold,’ with an advanced range of hair care products, in the presence of the Arab celebrities, UAE Singer Ruweida Al Mahrouqi, Egyptian Actress Rania Yousef and Lebanese Actress Nadine Al Rasi.

Addressing a press event attended by the three celebrity stars, Ayman Hamed, Head of Marketing, Marico Middle East, said: “Our new Parachute Gold product range follows intensive research and studies conducted among Arab women in the Middle East and North Africa region, to understand their concerns and requirements relating to hair care. The results indicated that they seek haircare products that provide adequate nourishment while also ensuring lustre and shine.”

He said that the key differential of Parachute Gold is its unique hair nourishment platform that draws on the wellness attributes of coconut oil, with proven ability to provide deep and nourishing effects to all three layers of hair, establishing Parachute Gold as the world’s leading coconut oil brand.

“We built further on the ability of the coconut oil base to nourish three deep layers of hair with our own unique research-based formula to make Parachute Gold products non-sticky and light, apart from providing a pleasant aroma. The cream variant, additionally, has the ability to reduce hair breakage by locking the protein inside the hair shaft and controlling dryness of hair.”

With proven benefits in managing dandruff and promoting the health of hair, Parachute Gold enjoys the proud endorsement of the three Arab celebrities. Ayman said: “Our brand ambassadors are known for their beautiful hair and they come from three different Arab countries, ensuring that we can take the message of our efficacious product to a wide audience of women and support them in their hair nourishment regimen.”

Speaking about their experience representing Parachute Gold and shooting the product commercial in Sri Lanka, Ruweida Al Mahrouqi said: “It is a great opportunity to be associated with such an international brand. Women in the Arab world have always been cautious about using hair products. Parachute Gold contains coconut oil and this makes it different and appealing to women.”

Rania Yousef expressed her happiness in being the Parachute Gold Ambassador. She said: “My experience with Parachute Gold has contributed a lot in enhancing my knowledge on how Arab women can maintain and nourish their hair. I invite all Arab women to experience the difference that Parachute Gold brings and discover the beneficial results both in the short- and long-term.”

“Managing healthy hair, given the harsh weather conditions and the physical factors that exists in parts of the region, has always been a challenge for Arab women. Parachute Gold has found the solution for this and it’s a worthy product that will benefit women looking to have healthy nourished hair,” commented Nadine Al Rasi.

To remember both our triumphs and our missteps – our promises made, and broken. The times we opened ourselves up to great adventures – or closed ourselves down, for fear of getting hurt. Because that’s what New Year’s is all about: getting another chance. A chance to forgive, to do better, to do more, to give more, to love more.
